Research and Innovation Unit

Research and innovation is one of the core mandates of the Edo State Institute of Technology and Management Usen. Developing synergy with key stakeholders, funding partners and collaborations are central to our missionstatement. These activities are driven by our research teams and through links with organisations. The institute provides basic support for our researchers and innovators to abstract and apply new knowledge in different domains. Furthermore, enabling environment is provided for our staff to develop research and innovation culture. This has enabled our researchersand innovators to maximise their potentials.

Currently, we areat advance stage of developing acomprehensive framework that will drive research and innovation related activities in the institute. We are activelycommitted to pursue collaboration that will help us to deliver all round benefits to our immediate community in particular and the country in general. To this end, we have continually encouraged our staff to form inter-disciplinary research and innovation teams to access grants/fellowships and partnership opportunities.

The institute also intends to provide a comprehensive integrated skill development program for our staff to enable them benefit from research and innovation linkages with world class researchers. This will involves robust regular exchange of ideas between captains of industries and entrepreneurs to identify key action research projects in contrast to the conventional or traditional research. Action research is skewed towards solving societal needs while the conventional research is career driven. The institute will provide basic support and the enabling environment for our staff to conduct their research for the benefits of the nation.

In addition, securing funding for research and innovation is an important consideration for the institute. Most funding sources are highly competitive so it is essential that our staffers are equipped with basic funding options as early as possible. To this end, the comprehensive framework that is currently been developed by the institute integrates series of lectures on grant-ship/scholarship opportunities. Funding opportunities for fellowships/scholarships and the ethics of its assessmentboth for staff and students will be rigorously pursued.

Furthermore, with respect to our students, part of the framework will also involves developing a strong links or partnerships with industries to solve real life and current industrial problems. The school iscommitted to providing professional development opportunities that promotes key attributes and employability skillsopportunities for our students. To this end, the institute capacity building courses will be linked with key industries within and outside the country.

In order words, the institute intends to link its education programmes to societal needs. This collaboration is aimed at improving employability of our grandaunts. Speakers from industry will regularly lecture on their related areas of their expertise. These are great opportunities for our students to have expert speakers on topics that are relevant to their programmes and also give an insight working in the industry.

In addition, Innovation and sustainability ofcommercialisation and innovation is also captured in the proposed framework. Modalities have been developed by the institute to engage key-stakeholders involve in commercialisation of our research outputs. Furthermore, series of lectures has also been integrated into the framework that will enable our staff benefits immensely from their intellectual property right. The lectures will provide the basic support for our staff to patent and commercialise their work.

The framework will also cover the global visibility of our researcher outputs through major research and innovation gateways. Consequently, the institute has developed a central database for our staff research outputs to be deposited in our website. This has fostered a stimulating environment for our researchers to thrive.

Finally, we have also planned to collaborate with key stakeholders through tracer studies of our grandaunts. This will enable us discuss with stakeholders on how the curriculum canbe responsive to the needs of the society. It is intended that competent based curriculum that covers the three basic elements of skills knowledge and attitude will be the key driver of the idea.
